Bam: Earthquake
In the early hours of the morning of Boxing Day 2003 an earthquake struck south-eastern Iran. The city of Bam, with an ancient mud citadel, was badly damaged and it is estimated nearly 30,000 people were killed, with many more injured.
I flew into the city in an Iranian Army cargo plane with some Norwegian doctors and nurses, who very kindly gave me a bed in their nice warm tent.
I think my strongest memory of this story was something that is unphotographable: the smell of rotting bodies. It is a sickly smell that was hard to get out of your nose.
